The lack of contextualised teaching and learning materials in early years has a major impact on the development for children especially those from underprivileged communities, which results into, low early literacy and numeracy skills as well as non-exposure to a culture of reading and self-education, a major drawback in their educational development.

Having access to books and being read to, plays an important role in early language and literacy development for children. Story books and playing give children the opportunity to use their imagination and to be creative.  It is also through stories and play that children learn about their cultures, traditions, and values.

Reading and being read to is playful.  Play is an integral part of child development and a natural way how children learn. Through play children improve their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional wellbeing. It is through play that children learn about the world they are in and about themselves. It allows children to learn the skills they need for school, work and building relationships.
